Some handheld gauges already have a standard RS232,USB, or IoT connection.
 
In these cases, we can either read and parse the output to be ready for input to a software solution, or provide a software solution called a "wedge" that translates the signal into a keyboard signal.  
 
The former is more secure, the latter easier to implement.

The majority of simple gauges: calipers, micro-meters, digital indicators, bore gauges, height gauges, etc. have a small output port for a proprietary signal. This signal can be interpreted via a hardware interface and the appropriate cable.
 
The data from the gauge can be communicated to your device using a cable, or wirelessly has worked with many of these devices - Gageport, Microridge, as well as gauge manufacturer devices like Mitutoyo.  We have found the most reliable and cost effective to be MicroRidge which offers both wireless and wired interfaces for virtually every capable gauge.

"Smart" devices

We tend to think of "smart" devices as being a relatively recent development, but in manufacturing there have been versions of smart devices for decades - devices that provide information on what they have done, what their settings are, alarms, etc.  In some cases the data out was designed for open integration, but in many cases, the data stream is designed to be read only by a proprietary program sold by the vendor.  QIC has worked with many of such instruments to read and parse the signal (offend many pages of data) to extract the relevant information.  
Depending upon a number of factors, we may integrate the device by intercepting the signal, or by some form of API or database integration with the proprietary program.  Examples of such instruments are X-ray fluorescence, NIR, various electronic chip testers, temperers, viscometers, spectrophotometers, titrations.. the list is extensive.

Every once in a while, we are presented with an interface that was designed to be impossible.  In one case, an automotive company had 6 production machines that provided several quality measurements as output.  The data stream was unique not only in format, but in actual transmission.  After a couple of days, working with communications monitoring equipment and our software tools, our technician designed and implemented a software solution that reliably dealt with the oddities.
As a result, this client could pass on buying 6 replacement machines at a cost of over $250,000 per!
